Lacquers can be plated to produce master/father disks, mother disks, and stampers. Each lacquer can produce one Master (sometimes called a "Father"). The master can be used as a stamper but if it is it cannot be duplicated later. Each Master can be plated to produce up to ten Mothers and each Mother can produce up to ten Stampers.
A Stamper can only press 500 to 1000 records before its quality degrades. If we want to press more than 500 copies of a record, it is more economical to plate another stamper from the Mother than it is to cut a new Lacquer and plate a new Master. While stampers can be stored for future use, any damage to the stamper will affect the sound on the records it produces so storage safety is critical.
